SAN DIEGO— Patricia Brossmann
recorded her fifth double-double of the season but San Diego fell to Pepperdine, 74-55.
The Toreros (8-7, 1-3 WCC) were undone by a dominant third quarter for the Waves (8-6, 2-2 WCC) in which Pepperdine outscored USD, 19-4.
Brossmann led the team with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Madison Pollock
added 12 points and seven rebounds. Sydney Hunter
chipped in 10 points and five rebounds while Sydney Shepard
had a team-high five assists.
The Waves came out aggressive to start the contest, shooting 65 percent on 11-of-17 from the field to take a 24-14 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Toreros went 5-of-14 to start the contest and 0-of-4 from three-point range.
San Diego rallied on an 11-2 run to end the second quarter and cut Pepperdine's lead to five, 34-29, at halftime. Brossmann tallied 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting to lead the Toreros in the first half.
The Torero offense struggled in the third period, shooting just 1-for-10 from the field and committing nine turnovers. The Waves outscored USD 19-4 in the period on 9-of-17 shooting to take a 20-point lead into the fourth quarter and never looked back.
San Diego held a slight edge in rebounds 33-32 with 13 offensive boards compared to Pepperdine's 10 and outscored the Waves 13-9 in second chance points. The Toreros struggled from three-point range, knocking down just 1-of-10 while Pepperdine finished 4-of-9.
Pepperdine saw solid production from their bench with 20 points to the Toreros' 10, and shot 52 percent from the field on the night. The Wave dominated points off of turnovers 25-16 and went 4-for-9 from three-point range.
The Toreros will hit the road next week taking on Saint Mary's on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. PT before traveling to Pacific on Saturday at 2 p.m. PT.
