Standing proudly on the University of San Diego campus since 1961, Torero Stadium has a cornerstone of USD Athletics for over six decades. What began as a modest venue has evolved into one of the West Coast's most inviting and versatile athletic facilities, combining modern amenities with the intimate atmosphere that makes every matchup feel electric.
The stadium underwent a dramatic transformation in the early 2000s, spurred by a partnership with the WUSA's San Diego Spirit. Over $3.5 million in renovations expanded seating and enhanced spectator comforts, creating a 6,000-seat venue ready for Pioneer Football League battles and West Coast Conference soccer showdowns. The South stands feature 1,100 backed bleacher seats alongside hospitality and coaching facilities, while the East end zone accommodates 1,900 fans, and the North stands hold 3,000 more in classic bleacher style.
An upgraded lighting system installed in 2001 illuminates the field for night games, while a Daktronics video board brings replays, highlights, and real-time information to life. A pedestrian walkway curves around three-quarters of the stadium, connecting fans to the action from every angle.
In 2008, a $250,000 field renovation brought new Bandera Sports turf and an advanced drainage system to the venue. Just four years later, the field was refreshed again — this time for a historic moment. In December 2012, Torero Stadium became the first WCC campus venue to host an NCAA national championship when it welcomed the Women's Soccer College Cup semifinals and title game, placing USD and San Diego at the center of the soccer world.
That legacy of hosting elite postseason soccer has continued, with Torero Stadium welcoming NCAA Tournament matches in 2023, 2024, and 2025, cementing its reputation as a premier destination for championship-level competition.
The stadium has also become a cauldron for unforgettable football moments. Torero Stadium roared to life with sold-out season openers in both 2024 and 2025, including a thrilling 27-21 victory over Cal Poly in 2024 that showcased the electric energy this venue creates when packed to capacity.
Beyond USD Athletics, Torero Stadium has served as a proud home for professional sports in San Diego. The venue hosted the San Diego Loyal SC of the USL Championship and provided a temporary home for the San Diego Wave FC of the National Women's Soccer League during the 2022 season. The San Diego Legion of Major League Rugby and the California Redwoods of the Premier Lacrosse League have also called Torero Stadium home. In a special homecoming moment in 2025, the Los Angeles Chargers returned to San Diego for training camp practices at Torero Stadium, led by head coach Jim Harbaugh — who began his coaching career at USD — marking the team's first appearance in San Diego since their 2017 departure.
