"This is an exciting step forward for USD Athletics and a natural extension of who we are as a university in San Diego," said Kimya Massey, USD Associate Vice President and Executive Director of Athletics. "Beach volleyball reflects the energy of our region and the direction of our department — one that continues to invest in opportunities for our student-athletes to compete at the highest level. This facility will position us to build a nationally competitive program from day one while also serving as an additional recreational resource for our students and campus community."
The new facility will transform the current Sports Center East Tennis Courts into a modern, high-performance venue designed to serve USD's beach volleyball program, as well as USD students, the campus community, and the broader San Diego community, while elevating the university's presence in one of the nation's fastest-growing collegiate sports. Construction is scheduled to begin this summer (2026).
Featuring four sand courts, including three competition courts and one dedicated warm-up and training court, the facility will also include lighting for evening practices and competition, a custom sand blend designed for elite-level performance, and courtside seating for up to 250 spectators.
"This facility gives us the foundation to build something special at USD," said head coach Derek Olson. "Just as important, it creates a space for the San Diego community to engage with the sport and be part of what we're building here. San Diego is the best place in the country for beach volleyball, and having a dedicated on-campus home allows us to recruit, develop, and compete at a high level. We're excited to get started and build a program that reflects the standard and culture of USD."
Beach volleyball marks USD's 18th varsity program and continues the department's commitment to expanding opportunities for women student-athletes.
The new beach volleyball courts are expected to include designated times for recreational student use, with details to be announced at a later date.
