(San Diego, CA) -- Tim Mickelson has been named the head men's golf coach at the University of San Diego, it was announced today by Tom Iannacone, Director of Athletics. Mickelson, who has been assistant men's golf coach at San Diego State the past two years, replaces Tim Moher and will begin his new duties July 1st.
"I think Tim fits very well with the current and future growth of our golf program," said Tom Iannacone.
Mickelson, the younger brother of current PGA tour pro Phil Mickelson, was an outstanding collegiate player at two PAC-10 programs. He played his first three seasons at Arizona State (1995-98) where he was a member of the 1996 NCAA Championship team. He went on to play his senior year at Oregon State University (1998-2000) where he led Oregon State to a 2nd place finish in the 2000 PAC-10 Championships, and also finished 2nd individually. The current holder of numerous OSU golf records, including low 18, 36, 54, and 72 hole scoring records, he graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Liberal Studies.
The past two seasons as assistant to Dale Walker at San Diego State, he helped lead the program to back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Regionals, as well as an appearance in the 2003 NCAA National Championships this past spring. Additionally, he played a key role in recruiting, scheduling, fund-raising, daily practices, booster/alumni relations, and the running and operation of two tournaments annually. Additionally, he is the published author of a book about college golf recruiting titled "The Road to College Golf."
