Live Television for Basketball-Volleyball Doubleheader Tonight

Nov. 23, 2004

(San Diego, CA) - Tonight's 5pm women's basketball game between San Diego and San Diego State kicks off a basketball-volleyball doubleheader between the Toreros and Aztecs at USD's Jenny Craig Pavilion. Both games will be televised live locally on San Diego Channel 4, with the volleyball match set to start at 8pm. Both games can also be followed live on the Internet via GAMETRACKER on usdtoreros.com.

In basketball action the two San Diego schools renew a city rivalry that has seen USD win the last two meetings. Prior to USD's 72-53 rout over SDSU two years ago, the Aztecs had won 24 of the first 25 games between the two schools. University of San Diego head coach Kathy Marpe is beginning her 25th season in command of the Torero program. Mission Bay products, freshmen starters Amanda Rego and Amber Sprague, promise to be the future for a USD squad that is bidding to qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2000. San Diego State (0-0) has yet to play a regular season game this year, while USD (0-1) lost to Arizona State in its opener Saturday.

USD volleyball (21-4) has already won the 2004 WCC Championship title, clinching its first conference crown since 1998 and the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. San Diego State (4-24) will wrap up a 2004 season in which it won just four times. Three Torero seniors will be honored before the match, including All-America candidate and USD record-holder Devon Forster (Boulder, CO). Sixth-year USD head coach Jennifer Petrie and the Toreros await a berth into the NCAA Tournament, announced Sunday afternoon at 3:45pm on ESPNNEWS. This season marks the eighth time in nine years San Diego has qualifed for the Tournament.
