Shannon Turley Named USD Head Strength & Conditioning Coach

(San Diego, Calif.) - The University of San Diego Athletic Department is pleased to announce that Shannon Turley has accepted the position of Head Strength and Conditioning Coach, it was announced today by Dan Yourg, Associate Director of Athletics. Turley, who will begin his new position on January 9th, 2006, comes to USD from the University of Missouri where he has been Assistant Director of Strength and Conditioning. He replaces Dean Aresco who stepped down after five seasons with the Torero program.

"Shannon Turley was selected out of an outstanding pool of candidates after an exhaustive search process by a committee of twelve members which included USD coaches, administrators and student-athletes," stated Dan Yourg. "He has an excellent background experientially and academically, and has the qualifications to lead performance training for all sixteen USD sports teams."

Turley is in his fifth season at the University of Missouri in the position of Assistant Director of Strength and Conditioning. He came to Mizzou in August of 2001 to serve as a graduate assistant, and was promoted to his current position in August of 2003 after earning his Masters of Education in Health Promotion and Education with an emphasis in Sports Psychology.

During his time with Missouri, Turley assisted with the player development program for the football team in addition to directing the injury prevention and performance enhancement programs for the volleyball, wrestling, women's basketball, men's and women's golf, gymnastics and tennis teams. This season he was was in charge of the volleyball and wrestling programs while coordinating the sports nutrition education and speed development programs for MU. He is also responsible for the direction of the Coaches Athletic Performance Development Clinic held each year.

Prior to joining the Tigers, Turley served the Kansas City Royals Baseball Club during the 2001 season where he was directly responsible for the strength and conditioning development of the AA affiliate Wichita Wranglers. During his stint with the Wranglers, Turley was fortunate to coach several current Royals including the 2003 American League Rookie of the Year Angel Berroa.

A Virginia Tech alumnus, Turley earned a Bachelor of Science degree in the Science of Human Nutrition Foods and Exercise in addition to a minor in Chemistry in December of 2000. While with the Hokies, Turley served the strength and conditioning program as a student coach following his track and field career.

Turley is recognized as a Strength and Conditioning Coach Certified by the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association as well as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist by the National Strength and Conditioning Association, and is a member of the International Society of Sports Nutrition.
