USD placed second overall in the race for this year's WCC Commissioner's Cup as the league's top all-around athletic program. The Toreros finished with 61.5 points, just 4.5 points behind winner Santa Clara. USD's women finished second to Santa Clara by a slim one-half point margin (34.5 To 34), while the men's programs tied for third with USF at 27.5 points, and behind SCU (31.5) and Pepperdine (28.5).
Each year the winning school is presented with a Commissioner's Cup trophy that it retains until the next season's winner is determined. SCU will also receive plaques for the men's and women's awards.
The Commissioner's Cup is determined by a points-based system that awards a predetermined number of points to each team based in its finish in the WCC's regular-season standings. The top finisher is awarded eight points with each place receiving one fewer in descending order. In sports that do not compete in a regular-season schedule (cross country, golf, women's rowing, tennis), the team's finish in the league championship is counted. For baseball, which competes in a divisional play format, winning percentage determines places three-through-eight and the top two places are based on the finish in the championship series.
Torero women's volleyball, by virtue of it's regular-season championship, earned the most points among USD sports teams. USD's women's and men's tennis programs, along with women's rowing, each earned 7 points for placing second at the WCC Championships.
