Carolyn Greer to Receive NATA Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award

June 14, 2007

Carolyn Greer, USD's Associate Director of Athletics for Sports Medicine, and the school's Head Athletic Trainer, will be honored on June 29th in Anaheim, California, by the National Athletic Trainers' Association with The Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award. This prestigious honor recognizes NATA members for their exceptional and unique contributions to the athletic training profession. It reflects a lifetime of dedication to the association and the field of athletic training on the national, district and local levels. Successful candidates must have a minimum of twenty years as a certified member of the NATA, and have made contributions at the national level.

"For 29 years Carolyn Greer has worked tirelessly to provide the best in athletic training to our student-athletes and has been instrumental in promoting the professionalism in her field," said Ky Snyder, USD Executive Director of Athletics. "This is a well deserved honor for Carolyn."

This past April Carolyn, who is wrapping up her 29th year at USD, was recognized as the 2007 San Diego State University Distinguished Alumnus by the Department of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences, and was also the recipient of the Far West Athletic Trainers' Association Most Distinguished award. Three years ago Carolyn was promoted to the position of Associate Director of Athletics for Sports Medicine at USD, and just two years ago was named the 2005 Thomas F. Burke Employee of the Year at USD for the Student Affairs Division.

At USD, she oversees seventeen intercollegiate teams and approximately 400 student-athletes annually where the Sports Medicine staff provides injury prevention, immediate care, and rehabilitation. Over the years she has taught Athletic Training classes at San Diego State University, as well as presented numerous times at professional meetings. As an Adjunct Professor for San Diego State University, she participates in the clinical education of athletic training students.

A 1975 graduate of SDSU, Carolyn was certified as an Athletic Trainer and went on to earn her Master's Degree in Sports Medicine. One of the first female head athletic trainers at an NCAA Division I program, Carolyn also holds professional certification as an instructor for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and as a Physical Therapist Assistant.

Carolyn, along with her husband Jeff, have two sons that both attend USD - David and Jason.
