Along with community being one of the core values at the University of San Diego, it is also extremely important to the Toreros athletic department. This past weekend, the entire department took part in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's Walk to Cure Diabetes.

"Throughout the year a lot of teams get involved in the community doing different things, but for the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes we came together as an entire department," said Ron Valenzuela the Coordinator of Student-Athlete Services at USD.

"The athletic department became involved last year when [USD Executive Director of Athletics] Ky Snyder became the Corporate Co-Chair of the JDRF Walk to Cure. It became a way for USD to get involved in three very important aspects: fundraising, participating and volunteering," said Valenzuela.

"Community service is a big part of our identity as an institution and something we are committed to as a department. Being involved is a way for our athletes to become a part of the larger San Diego community. It allows them to be aware of not only themselves but also the community as a whole. It gives them a sense of belonging and allows them to be a part of something bigger," emphasized Valenzuela.

The men's basketball, women's basketball, softball and baseball teams fully participated in the event. Over 300 participants affiliated with the University of San Diego were involved.

"There was a great turnout. It was inspiring to see how many people came together to support a very worthwhile cause," remarked Erica Carlson of the women's basketball team.

In all, there were close to 5,000 walkers and over $640,000 was raised. "I want to pass my thanks on to the coaches and players who helped make the event such a success," said Lauren Holcomb, the Special Events Manager for the JDRF.

"This is just one of the many ways that USD Athletics gets involved. Community service is something we believe in and are committed to doing," said Valenzuela.

Next on the calendar for the Toreros is Friday, November 20th, when they will participate in The Light the Night Walk to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
