IRVINE, Calif.- The University of San Diego men's tennis team saw the last of their competitors fall on Sunday at the USTA/ITA Southwest Region Championships in Irvine, Calif. as Dean Jackson and Thibaut Visy were defeated in their respective matches.
Jackson met Daniel Nguyen of Southern California in the singles quarterfinals but was unable to knock off the top seed, instead losing in straight sets (6-4, 6-0). Nguyen advanced to the finals, which will be played on Monday.
Visy's run took him all the way to the finals of the consolation bracket. After beating UC Santa Barbara's Taylor Chavez Goggin in the semifinal (6-7, 6-4, 10-5), Visy lost to consolation-winner Michael Grant of USC (6-4, 6-3) in the final.
"I was a little disappointed," said head coach Brett Masi after the tournament. "I thought we'd do better but this might be a good lesson for us that we need to work harder and keep preparing ourselves so that we're ready for our last tournament of the fall and the regular season in January as well. With the level of competition it showed that we need to get better so we'll learn from it and move forward."
Jackson led the Toreros in singles, posting a 4-1 individual record in the tournament, while Visy went 3-2 in singles. As a team, USD went 15-8 in singles and 4-4 in doubles.
The Toreros are back on the court when they travel to Los Angeles, Calif. for the SoCal Intercollegiates Nov. 3rd-7th.
