SAN DIEGO--USD Athletics had four student-athletes recognized in their respective sports by the San Diego Hall of Champions as Stars of the Month for February. Through the first two months of 2010 USD has now had seven student-athletes honored.
Alex Ching (Golf)--Led the Toreros men's golf team to three first place finishes in three team events. Getting stronger as the month went on, he captured the Allstate Sugar Bowl Mardi Gras Invitational, tying the course record with a 64 first round and went on to win by six strokes. He placed second in the 5th Annual USD Callaway Invitational and was fifth in the San Diego Intercollegiates.
Dominique Conners (Basketball)--The sophomore guard led USD to a tie for fourth in the WCC. Conners led the team with a 19.1 scoring average, shooting .430 from the field and finishing with three consecutive 20-plus point games. She earned one WCC Player of the Week award and was named to the All-WCC First-team. Her 16.1 season average is the fourth best in program history and her 73 steals is third all-time.
Dean Jackson (Tennis)--The consistent No. 1 singles player for USD, Jackson, a junior from Germany, has started the season 7-1 in singles and 4-2 in doubles. Jackson's only loss thus far came against No. 1 USC's Robert Farah, at the time ranked No. 14 in the nation. Since then, Jackson has won five straight singles contests, including garnering a three set victory against University of Pacific's 87th ranked Artem Gramma.
Brandon Johnson (Basketball)--Johnson became the Toreros all-time scoring leader, passing Gyno Pomare (1,725 points) with his 21-point performance at Gonzaga. His high for the month was a 25-point performance at San Francisco. Finishing the month with 1,765 points and 516 assists, he became the first player in West Coast Conference history to lead his school in both career scoring and assists.
