Gabriel Derricks (Oak Park, CA), a four-year starter for the Toreros' defensive secondary, received good news on Saturday when he signed a free agent contract with the NFL's Atlanta Falcons. The 6-3, 200 lb. defensive back appeared in 9 contests this past season while earning First Team All-PFL honors. He finished with 58 tackles (30 solo), 1 interception (26 yard return), 2 pass breakups, 3 quarterback hurries and 1 forced fumble.
"Atlanta is the best spot for me in terms of roster depth and potential playing time," stated Derricks. "It's really exciting."
During his stellar career it wasn't uncommon to watch opposing teams shy away from throwing to his side of the field. In 2008 he appeared in all 11 games while earning All-PFL First Team honors with 42 tackles (30 solo), 1 interception (5 yards) and 7 pass breakups. In 2007 he played in all 11 games with 55 tackles (41 solo), 1 interception (26 yard return) and 7 pass breakups. In 2006 he was tabbed the PFL Freshman Defensive Player of the Year.
Derricks joins former teammates Josh Johnson (Tampa Bay), John Matthews (Indianapolis Colts) and Eric Bakhtiari (Tennessee Titans) who are currently with NFL teams.
