SAN DIEGO, Calif.- The University of San Diego men's tennis team kicked off the 2011 season with a perfect day against San Diego State at Aztec Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon. The Toreros won all nine matches they played in the hidden dual against the Aztecs, six singles matches and three doubles contests.
In singles, No. 31 Dean Jackson took down San Diego State's Giovanni Vaglietti 7-5, 7-5. Junior Nikola Bubnic followed that with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Tim Schulz van Endert, while Patrick Pohlmann defeated Andre Feliz 6-3, 6-4.
The Toreros kept the momentum going as sophomore Thibaut Visy upended Jose Sierra Short 6-3, 6-3, and senior Nils Schive bested Shiva Sangwan by a score of 6-1, 6-2. Wrapping up singles play with a victory was freshman Emilio Mora, who earned a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Matthew Tosches.
USD didn't let up in doubles play on the afternoon, as Jackson and Pohlmann, ranked seventh in the most recent ITA rankings, defeated Vaglietti and Nicholas 8-3. Schive and Bubnic posted an 8-4 victory over Feliz and Schulz van Endert, while Clarke Spinosa and Visy tacked on the final Torero win by cruising past Tosches and Sangwan 8-1.
"Obviously, it was a good start to the season," commented Torero head coach Brett Masi. "To not lose a match or even a set is always very positive and we want to keep improving as we go."
The Toreros return to Aztec Tennis Center on Sunday to face UC Irvine in another hidden dual at 2:00 p.m.
