SAN DIEGO, Calif.- Following a great start to the 2011 season on Saturday, the University of San Diego men's tennis team added a total of seven more wins to the books when they matched up with UC Irvine in a hidden dual at San Diego State's Aztec Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon.
The Toreros won six singles matches on the day and one doubles match. USD's Dean Jackson, ranked No. 31, defeated UC Irvine's Chris Kearney, who is ranked 33rd, by scores of 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. Nikola Bubnic earned his second win of the season as well by topping Sam Gould in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.
Patrick Pohlmann also tallied his second singles win of the year, besting Stephen Stege 6-3, 6-2, while freshman Clarke Spinosa put away Fabian Matthews 6-4, 6-1 for his first singles victory of the season. Sophomore Thibaut Visy added to the Toreros' win total by beating Ryan Mayer 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 and Emilio Mora took down Jon Kazarian 6-3, 6-4.
The only Torero singles loss came when Nils Schive fell to Ryan Cheung in a back-and-forth three set match, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.
USD went 1-3 as a team in doubles, with the seventh-ranked tandem of Jackson and Pohlmann defeating Kearney and Stege 8-4. The Anteaters got the best of the Toreros in the other three matches, however, with UCI's Steven Henderson and Gould beating Schive and Bubnic 8-5, Kazarian and Nick Northcott earning an 8-5 victory over Spinosa and Visy, and Matthews and Cheung defeating Moritz Melchoir and Mora by a score of 8-6.
"Overall we felt like it was a great start to the season," said Torero head coach Brett Masi. "We were happy to play as well as we did in only losing one singles match and our doubles play was solid. It was also good to see some opponents who we'll meet later in our dual match schedule this year and we'll see if we can keep the momentum going into next weekend."
The Toreros open their dual match schedule on Saturday, Jan. 22nd with a pair of home matches against UC San Diego at 8:00 a.m. and BYU at 1:30 p.m. from USD's West Courts.
