SAN DIEGO, Calif. -The University of San Diego women's basketball team (3-1) upended the University of Louisiana-Lafayette (1-4), 103-44 Friday evening in a non-conference game at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. This marked only the third time in program history that USD has eclipsed the 100-point mark, and it is the second most points in program history. The 59-point victory marks the largest margin of victory in program history.
USD has twice hit the century mark, both came against WCC opponent Portland, and both came in San Diego. The last time this happened was in the 2004-05 season, when USD hit 104 points in a win over the Pilots in the Jenny Craig Pavilion, and the previous time before that was in 1991 in the Sports Center, a 104-64 win.
The Toreros were paced by senior guard Izzy Chilcott, who recorded a career-high 20 points on 9-for-14 shooting form the field, while pulling down five rebounds and recording four steals. Freshman guard Katie Kuklok also had a monster of a game, as she recorded a career-high 18 points on 7-for-8 shooting form the field including hitting 4-of-5 from beyond the arc. Guards Morgan Woodrow (14 points), Nicole Ballestero (12 points) and Dominique Conners(11 points) were the three other Toreros to score in double figures, while Woodrow recorded a double-double with 11 rebounds. USD shot an impressive .531 from the floor and out rebounded the visitors 54-31. All but two Toreros who stepped onto the court recorded at least two points
For the Ragin' Cajuns, Krystal Motley was the lone player to record double figures as she had 11 points on 5-for-10 shooting form the field. As a team, UL shot .302 form the field.
In the first half, the Toreros got off to a slow start as Louisiana grabbed a 6-3 lead through the first four minutes of action. After Chilcott was inserted into the line-up, San Diego got some life, as Chilcott proved to be a spark plug for the Toreros. With USD trailing 7-6 with 14:37 to go, a Conners lay-up jump started a 15-3 San Diego run to give USD its first double-digit lead at 21-10 with 9:38 to go in the period. San Diego then kept the pedal to the medal and closed out the half on a 25-7 run to go in to the break up 44-17.
In the second half, tToreros picked up right where the left off the first half, completely dominating every aspect of the game, as the Ragin' Cajuns could only score one basket over the first 7:30 of the frame, and USD then found themselves up by 52 at 71-19 with 13:38 to go. USD never let up as they simply cruised their way to a historic victory.
San Diego will return to action on Monday as they host Colgate ion a 6 p.m. non-conference game at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
