SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The 16th-ranked University of San Diego men's tennis team squeaked by Marquette, 4-3, in their first match of the Hilton San Diego Mission Valley Spring Classic at the Hogan Tennis Center on Thursday afternoon. The Toreros won the doubles point but lost five of six first sets in singles before rallying back for three singles wins.
The Toreros (8-4) got doubles wins at No. 2 from Victor Pugliese and Ciaran Fitzgerald and No. 3 from Andrew Carlisle and Thibaut Visy. Nikola Bubnic and Patrick Pohlmann fell at No. 1, 8-5.
In singles, Marquette (6-8) came out swinging right away, pulling out to early leads in nearly every match. The Golden Eagles earned the first singles win of the day when Jonathan Schwerin defeated Pugliese, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 5.
At No. 2, 60th-ranked Bubnic dropped his first set to Dan Mamalat, 5-7, before mounting a comeback and winning the final two sets to secure a 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 victory. No. 106 Pohlmann did the same at No. 1. Pohlmann lost his first set to Jose Crowley, 2-6, before bouncing back for the 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 win.
Carlisle, playing in his first-career dual match, lost his singles contest at No. 6, before No. 111 Visy clinched the USD win with a straight-sets victory over Logon Collins, 7-6, 6-2 at No. 3. Fitzgerald fell in the final match of the day at No. 4 by a score of 6-1, 6-7, 6-1.
The Toreros move on to play Oklahoma State on Friday at 10:00 am at the Hogan Tennis Center in the semifinal. The winner of that match will play the winner of the Harvard/San Diego State match in the tournament final on Friday at USD not before 3:00 pm.
