The University of San Diego men's tennis team wrapped up play in their first day at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic and Sherwood Collegiate Cup in both Palm Desert, Calif. and Los Angeles, Calif. on Friday.
Uros Petronijevic and Geoffrey Fosso advanced to the third round winning a pair of singles matches on Friday, as play opened up at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic. Petronijevic knocked off Denver's Aidan Talcott 6-0, 6-2 and TCU's Will Stein 6-1, 6-3. Geoffrey Fosso won his first two singles matches of his collegiate career beating COD's Menzel 6-0, 6-0 and TCU's 84th ranked Nick Chappell 6-3, 6-3.
"Really proud of Geoffrey Fosso today for his effort in Palm Desert," Coach Brett Masi said after today's matches. "To beat Nick Chappell who played number one for TCU the last few years is a great win, and in his first tournament as a Torero at that."
Several Toreros got off to a great start winning their first rounds in Palm Desert. Andrew Raphaelson won his first match over COD's Bilbourn 6-2, 6-0. Fellow upperclassman Ciaran Fitzgerald followed suit beating Pepperdine's Tom Hill 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. Romain Kalaydjian also won his opening singles, beating COD's Ogassawara 6-0, 6-1. Freshman Aaron Addison beat Pepperdine's Alex Giannini's 6-2, 6-5 (6), while Patrick Hall faced a tough loss to Denver's Diogo Rocha 6-3, 6-1.
Although Fosso and Petronijevic struggled in their opening doubles match against North Carolina Sate, doubles duo Raphaelson and Fitzgerald won their first match of the season beating COD's Bensoussan/Menzel 6-1.
West of the NCTC, 27th ranked senior captain Clarke Spinosa and freshman Filip Vittek got solid wins in singles at the Sherwood Collegiate Cup in Los Angeles, Calif. Spinosa defeated Stanford's Trey Strobel 6-4, 6-2, but gets knocked off by UCLA's Gage Brymer, who holds a No. 120 ranking, 6-4, 6-3 in the second round. Losing his first round, Vittek rebounded with a big win over Stanford's Jamin Ball 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (5) in the consolation bracket.
"Our guys played really hard today," Coach Masi said. "They got some good wins and solid matches under their belts. We just need to keep going out there and play more matches. That's what this weekend is all about."
The Toreros return to action January 18 for both the NCTC in Palm Desert, Calif. and the Sherwood Collegiate Cup in Los Angles, Calif.
