Petersen recognized by San Diego Hall of Champions

Dec. 6, 2016

Jonathan Petersen has been named a Amateur Star of the Month for November by the San Diego Hall of Champions. The junior defensive end from Poway, California, who recently was named a unanimous pick for the 2016 All-Pioneer Football League Defense, played a key role down the stretch as the Toreros won the PFL championship outright with an 8-0 record and advanced to the FCS Playoffs for the second time in three seasons.

During the month of November he led the Toreros to a 3-0 mark with wins over Stetson (42-7), Campbell (57-21) and Cal Poly (35-21). The home win over Stetson guaranteed a share of the program's third PFL title in the last four years, and the win at Campbell clinched the outright PFL Championship with a perfect 8-0 record. On Nov. 26th the No. 24 ranked Toreros upset No. 20 Cal Poly in the first round of the FCS Playoffs, USD's first post-season win and the team's second trip to the playoffs in three seasons. For the month Petersen totaled 15 tackles (11 solo), 9 tackles for loss (-45 yards), 6 quarterback sacks (-37 yards), 3 quarterback hurries, 3 forced fumbles and 1 blocked kick. He was named the PFL Defensive Player of the Week after his 3 sack, 5 tackles-for-loss effort at Campbell.

Following the team's historic playoff win at Cal Poly and second round contest at No. 1 seed North Dakota State, the Toreros finished with an overall record of 10-2. Petersen finished ranked 1st in the PFL in sacks (12.5, -84 yards) and tackles for loss (23.0, -122 yards). Additional season stats include 50 tackles (35 solo), 13 QB hurries, 4 forced fumbles and 2 blocked kicks.
