Aug. 5, 2016 TOREROS REPORT TO CAMP AUGUST 9TH: The USD Torero football team, under the direction of fourth-year head coach Dale Lindsey, will report to camp on Tuesday, August 9th. Coach Lindsey and his staff are expecting 110 student-athletes to report with the first practice slated for Wednesday, August 10th, from 3:45 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. at the Manchester Field (see complete camp schedule below). TORERO TIDBITS: For the sixth straight year the Toreros were picked to finish first in the PFL Preseason Coaches' Poll. USD received five of a possible 10 first-place votes and 95 of a maximum 100 points to edge out Dayton (6 first place votes, 94 points). San Diego and Dayton shared the 2015 regular-season title. They were followed by Drake (68), Morehead State (64), Campbell (62), Marist (56), Butler (54), Jacksonville (53), Stetson (27), Valparaiso (21) and Davidson (11). The upcoming 2016 season marks the 24th year for the Pioneer Football League â€" the nation's only non-scholarship, football-only NCAA Football Championship Subdivision conference. The league will feature 11 teams each playing an eight-game schedule to determine the league champion and recipient of the automatic bid to the 2016 NCAA FCS Championship. Last season USD finished 9-2 overall and 7-1 in PFL play. Five Toreros were named to the 2016 All-PFL Preseason squad â€" CB Jamal Agnew and DE Jonathan Petersen on defense, and OL Miles McArdle, WR Brian Riley and WR Justin Priest on offense. The Toreros return 13 starters (players with 7 or more starts) from last year's team - five on offense, eight on defense, and 46 returners (not including 2015 redshirts).
2016 SCHEDULE: The Toreros will kick-off the 2016 season on Saturday, Sept. 3rd with a 6:00 p.m. home contest against Western New Mexico. The opener will be followed by a road trip to Cal Poly on Sept. 10th (4pm). Following a bye week, PFL play begins with Dayton visiting San Diego on Sept. 24th (4pm).
