San Diego, Calif. -- Shaney Fink, USD Senior Associate Director of Athletics and Senior Woman Administrator, was introduced this morning as Seattle University's new Athletic Director at a 10:00 a.m. press conference on the campus of Seattle U. Her official start date will be November 1st.
"I am both excited and proud of Shaney being named Director of Athletics at Seattle," said Ky Snyder, USD Vice President for Athletics and Facilities Management. "She has worked tirelessly to become an Athletic Director. We will miss her but know Seattle will benefit greatly from her leadership."
In her fifth year as the Senior Associate Athletics Director and eighteenth year with the University of San Diego athletics department, Shaney Fink is responsible for day to day operations and management of 17 NCAA Division I teams and 450 student athletes.
"I am thrilled for the opportunity to serve as the Director of Athletics at Seattle University," said Shaney Fink. "I am grateful for the support of President Steve Sundborg, the Trustees, Executive Vice President Tim Leary, Search Committee Chair Mary Peterson and all who were involved in the process. I am looking forward to building on the foundation of success at Seattle U and will engage the entire community, to work together to fulfill the bold vision for Seattle University Athletics."
At USD Fink has been engaged in many campus committees and routinely participates in efforts towards gender equity, inclusion and sexual assault prevention. She chairs the Torero Athletics Council, a grassroots effort to facilitate communication between faculty and members of the athletics department.
Fink's current sport oversight responsibilities include men's and women's soccer, men's and women's rowing and men's tennis. She has previously supervised volleyball, women's tennis and golf. Since 2005, she has been designated as the Senior Woman Administrator.
"It is not easy to say goodbye to my University of San Diego family," added Fink. "I am especially grateful to Athletics Director Ky Snyder, President Jim Harris and President Emerita Mary Lyons who have been wonderful mentors and friends. I will miss the coaches, student athletes and athletics department staff, athlete alumni and friends of athletics as well as all of my colleagues at the University of San Diego. USD is a special place and I am proud of all that we have accomplished during the past 16 years."
Fink served as the West Coast Conference representative on the NCAA Legislative Council and the Pioneer Football League representative on the NCAA Legislative Council Football Championship Series Subcommittee from 2011 to 2015.
As a member of the West Coast Conference Executive Council, she chaired the Academics, Legislation & Compliance Cabinet and Senior Woman Administrators and sits on the Waiver Committee. Fink is currently participating in the NCAA Pathways program after completing the 2015 NACWAA Executive Institute in Kansas City in 2015. In 2013 she was named NCAA Division I FCS Administrator of the Year by NACWAA. Fink served as the tournament director for the 2012 NCAA Women's College Cup held in Torero Stadium.
Prior to her current position, she was the Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance and Student Services (2005-2012), Assistant Director of Athletics for Academic Support (2003-2005) as well as Coordinator of Academic Support (2000-2003). During the 1999 season she assisted the Torero volleyball coaching staff, helping the Toreros to a 23-6 record and second round finish in the NCAA Tournament. Prior to USD she gained coaching experience at the high school, college (Colgate University) and international levels. Upon completion of her collegiate volleyball career at University of California at Berkeley, Fink competed professionally in beach and indoor volleyball, domestically and internationally.
Fink earned her B.A. in Social Science from Berkeley and her Master's Degree at USD in Counseling. Shaney and her husband, Tom Vorkoper, reside in Encinitas with their three children - Lucas, Mia and Leon.
