Bill McGillis hits the ground running at USD

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Three days into his new job as the University of San Diego's athletic director, Bill McGillis wanted to get out of town.

That's awfully quick for a guy who had not yet unpacked the boxes in his office for what he has called his dream assignment.

McGillis desired to get on the road with the Toreros men's basketball team, to get a feel for a high-profile program on campus, and on Jan. 26, the Thursday of his first week, the Toreros were playing at Gonzaga - the school by which all other basketball programs measure success in the West Coast Conference.

The jaunt probably said a lot about how McGillis will handle his duties moving forward. Those who have worked with him say he's not one to linger behind his desk.

"I wanted a flavor of the men's basketball program immediately," McGillis said. "And often times being on the road with a team is the best chance to do that. You're out of the fray of everything else that goes on at your own campus.
