May 2, 2017 San Diego, Calif. - USD head football coach Dale Lindsey and his coaching staff are pleased to announce their 2017 recruiting class. The 36 incoming recruits will join up with the rest of the Torero returners when the team reports for camp in early August. Five of the recruits are from San Diego County, and a total of twenty-six student-athletes hail from the state of California. Rounding out the class are ten recruits from the states of Arizona (1), Connecticut (1), Hawaii (1), Illinois (1), Oklahoma (1), Oregon (1), Texas (2) and Washington (2).
By position the incoming class includes nine defensive linemen, seven offensive linemen, four wide receivers, three cornerbacks, three nickel backs, three safeties, two linebackers, two tight ends, two running backs and one quarterback.
USD's season opener is September 2nd against Western New Mexico (2:00 p.m.) at Walter J. Zable Field at Torero Stadium. This past season the Toreros finished 10-2 overall and finished with a program-best national ranking of 19th (FCS STATS Top-25 Poll). USD won the Pioneer Football League title with a perfect 8-0 record and won the programs' and PFL's first-ever NCAA FCS Playoff game with its 35-21 victory over Cal Poly. Senior cornerback Jamal Agnew was drafted in the 5th round by the Detroit Lions, and is the program's second draft pick behind Josh Johnson (2008, 5th round, Tampa Bay Buccaneers).
