SAN DIEGO – The San Diego women's basketball program (8-7, 2-2 WCC) exploded on the offensive end for their highest point total of the season, defeating Pacific (5-9, 0-3 WCC), 84-74, on Saturday afternoon at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
Kiera Oakry led all Torero scorers with 15 points, while
Laura Erikstrup added 11 points and eight rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a difficult offensive first half on Thursday, the Toreros made no mistake to start the game, turning in a scorching offensive performance.
- Eriksrup and Veronica Sheffey each found their shot early in the game, as Erikstrup established herself in the paint with six points in the quarter.
- Jess Finney helped the Toreros pull away and build a 22-12 lead with a three pointer to end the first quarter.
- From there, the Toreros flexed their muscle and shot 50 percent from the field in the second quarter.
- A 7-2 run sparked by Oakry, helped the Toreros get even more breathing room, as Oakry added three points and set up a fast break layup to Courtney Wristen.
- The lead ballooned to as high as 25 points in the third quarter, as San Diego went on a 21-6 run.
- Amanda Olinger and Oakry propelled the Toreros during the run, with all eight of Olinger's points coming during the stretch.
- San Diego also played tremendous defense to pull ahead, forcing Pacific to just five field goals in the period.
- While Pacific recovered in the fourth and cut the lead to just nine, the Toreros kept up the offensive output.
- Needing some defense late in the game, the Toreros found it and forced Pacific into several fouls on the offensive and defensive end.
- The Toreros would hit 17 free throws in the game and eight in the final six minutes to ice the victory.
TORERO TIDBITS
- San Diego tallied its largest first half scoring output of the season with 41 points.
- The Toreros finished with a season-high 23 assists in the win, good for a mark the team accomplished just twice last season.
- San Diego outrebounded the Tigers by 12 and have now out-rebounded 13 of 15 opponents this season.
- Myah Pace moved into sole possession of fourth on the Toreros all-time steals list, passing Amy Kame. Next up is Amanda Rego (240) in third place.
