Women’s Basketball Drops Contest at BYU

PROVO, Utah – The San Diego women's basketball program (8-8, 2-3 WCC) dropped its lone contest of the week, falling on the road at BYU (8-8, 3-2 WCC), 63-49, on Saturday afternoon at the Marriott Center.

Kiera Oakry led all Torero scorers with 11 points and three, three-pointers, while Kasey Neubert added 10 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first five minutes of the contest proved to be a physical, tight affair, with early jumpers from Oakry and Jess Finney to make it 4-4.
  • However, the Cougars would end the first quarter on a 14-3 run, as Lauren Gustin and Nani Falatea established themselves early.
  • The first quarter output by the Cougars proved to be enough to carry them the rest of the night, as the two sides would be separated by just three points across the final three quarters.
  • The Toreros picked up their offensive output in the second quarter, shooting 46.2 percent from the field.
  • An early 7-3 run helped start to close the gap, while Ayanna Khalfani scored four of her five first half points in the second quarter.
  • Each time the Toreros would make a run, the Cougars were able to deliver a response to keep the lead around 10 points.
  • Neubert found a hot streak in the third quarter, scoring six points and helping the Toreros cut the lead to 10, but Gustin and the Cougars answered right back.
  • Neubert and Khalfani scored the fourth quarter's opening two buckets and Oakry added a three pointer to get the lead as low as eight with 7:23 remaining.
  • However, the Cougars were able to do enough to keep the Toreros at bay and would go on to win the game.

TORERO TIDBITS
  • Neubert set a new career-high with three blocks in the game. It also matches Amanda Olinger for the most by a Torero in a game this season.
  • Behind Oakry's three pointers, the Toreros shot their highest three-point percentage on the road this season at 42.9 percent.
