High-Scoring Affair Goes Awry in Northridge

San Diego scores first, adds two in ninth but falls 12-10 to CSUN at Matador Field

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — San Diego baseball (9-13-1, 3-3 WCC) struck first for an early lead and plated a pair of runs in the top of the ninth inning on Tuesday afternoon but could not secure a win at Cal State Northridge, suffering a 12-10 defeat to the Matadors (14-6, 3-3 Big West) at Matador Field.

EARLY LEAD NOT ENOUGH, LAST-CHANCE SURGE TOO LATE
  • Sophomore outfielder/left-handed pitcher Austin Smith (UC San Diego, Granite Hills High School) got the scoring started in the top of the first inning with a two-RBI single, sending a sharp ground ball back up the middle to bring home both junior utility player Angelo Peraza (St. Augustine High School) and sophomore shortstop Justin DeCriscio.
  • CSUN responded and took a 3-2 lead with a three-run bottom of the second, but USD immediately answered by scoring twice on RBIs from junior utility player Kevin Sim (sacrifice fly) and Smith (groundout) to pull back ahead at 4-3.
  • The Matadors scored one run in the third inning, four in the fourth, and three in the fifth to establish a 11-4 lead before USD hit back with two runs in the seventh (another sacrifice fly from Sim that brought home DeCriscio for a third time and a RBI grounder from Costello), cutting the deficit to 11-6.
  • San Diego's comeback efforts continued in the top of the eighth when junior centerfielder Dustin Allen scored from third on a failed pickoff attempt to first and DeCriscio brought in Arakawa on another RBI ground ball, cutting the deficit to three runs at 11-8.
  • After USD surrendered a single run in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single, Smith sent a two-run homer over the right-field wall in the top of the ninth, bringing the Toreros back within two.
  • Allen followed with a two-out walk to bring the game's tying run to the plate, but San Diego got no closer, suffering a tough 12-10 loss to CSUN at Matador Field on Tuesday afternoon.
YOUNG PITCHERS BATTLE ON THE MOUND
  • Freshman right-handed pitcher Aídan Gonzalez began the game on the mound for USD in what marked his first career start. He allowed three runs (zero earned) on three hits while striking out a single batter and walking none.
  • Freshman lefty Mikiah Negrete was first out of the bullpen in relief of Gonzalez and gave up four earned runs on five hits.
  • He was followed by freshman Tristan LaMaison, who surrendered three runs (two earned) on four hits.
  • Redshirt freshman righty Nick Suspenzi and sophomore right-hander Morgan Lunceford teamed up for a pair of scoreless frames across the sixth and seventh innings, striking out just one (Suspenzi) but walking none between the two of them.
  • Freshman righty JD Goodcase closed the game out on the mound for USD and allowed a run on two hits.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Smith paced the San Diego offense with a 2-for-3 afternoon that saw him notch a game-high five-RBIs, score a run, draw a walk, and hammer his second home run in his last three games (also his second in a USD uniform).
  • Allen was next with a 3-for-4 performance that included a walk and a run scored, extending his hit streak to a season-high five games.
  • Within that five-game hit streak, which dates back to his 2-for-4 performance on March 20 at California Baptist, Allen has recorded multiple hits twice.
  • DeCriscio was 1-for-3 and tied the game high with three runs scored alongside an RBI and a walk.
  • His first-inning single extended his hit streak to nine games and bolstered his team-leading .353 (30-for-85) batting average. He has now hit safely in 20 of San Diego's 23 games so far this season.
  • Gurevitch was 1-for-5 on Tuesday, extending his hit streak to five games.
  • Peraza was 1-for-3 with two runs scored, a walk, and a hit by pitch, giving him hits in each of his last three games.
  • Arakawa went 1-for-3 with two runs scored of his own and two walks.
  • Sim was 1-for-2 with two sacrifice flies (both of which scored DeCriscio), a run scored, and a walk.
  • Sophomore catcher Ariel Armas went 0-for-3 but drew a walk on eight pitches with two outs in the top of the sixth.
  • Including Tuesday's outing at CSUN, three of Suspenzi's four career college appearances (all this season) have spanned exactly one scoreless inning.
  • San Diego pitchers allowed just one total walk on Tuesday, while USD hitters drew eight.
  • CSUN's lone batter that drew a walk came around to score, while just three of San Diego's eight batters that reached via a walk resulted in a run.
  • Every pitcher USD used on Tuesday was either in his first or second college season.
