Toreros Falter in Game One Versus Waves

San Diego drops 8-3 decision to Pepperdine at Fowler Park on Friday

SAN DIEGO — San Diego baseball (9-14-1, 3-4 WCC) erased an early three-run deficit on Friday but could not overcome a late Pepperdine surge, falling to the Waves (7-16, 2-5 WCC) by an 8-3 margin as it resumed West Coast Conference play at Fowler Park.

GUREVITCH LEADS COMEBACK EFFORT
  • After Pepperdine struck first for three runs in the top of the game's opening inning, freshman infielder/designated hitter Jack Gurevitch ripped an RBI triple off the left-center field wall, plating junior utility players Jack Costello and Kevin Sim (Torrey Pines High School) in the bottom of the second to make it 3-2.
  • Junior center fielder Dustin Allen followed with a well-struck sacrifice fly to deep right field, driving home Gurevitch to tie the score at three.
  • Both the Waves and the Toreros remained scoreless through Friday night's third, fourth, and fifth innings before Pepperdine scored two runs in the sixth, one in the seventh, and two in the top of the ninth to pull away and deal USD a tough 8-3 loss at Fowler Park.
ON THE MOUND
  • Redshirt junior righty James Sashin began the game on the mound for the Toreros and turned in 5.2 innings, surrendering five runs (four earned) on eight hits while striking out five and walking two.
  • He was followed by redshirt junior right-hander Ryan Robinson (one inning), junior righty Ivran Romero (1.1 innings), sophomore right-hander Morgan Lunceford (0.0 innings), and freshman righty JD Goodcase (one inning).
  • Romero (Poway High School) and Goodcase set forth the Toreros' most impressive pitching performances on Friday, combining for 2.1 scoreless frames while walking none and striking out four.
  • Three of those four strikeouts between the two of them came when Romero struck out the side in the eighth.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Gurevitch paced the USD offense with a 1-for-4 performance that saw him drive in two and score a run.
  • His second-inning triple extended his hit streak to a season-long six games.
  • Sim was 1-for-3 with a run scored and a walk, extending his hit streak to four games.
  • Peraza was 1-for-4 with a single, also extending his hit streak to four games.
  • DeCriscio matched Peraza's 1-for-4 performance, bolstering his team-high .348 (31-for-89) batting average as he moved his hit streak to a team-high 10 games.
  • He has now hit safely in 21 of San Diego's 24 games so far this season, including eight multi-hit performances.
  • DeCriscio has a hit in every WCC game USD has played this season, including 2-for-4 performances in all three matchups last weekend at Santa Clara.
  • As a whole, he is batting .393 (11-for-28) with 10 runs scored, one double, one home run, and one RBI in seven conference contests so far.
