Men’s Rowing Finishes Weekend of Racing Across the Bay Area

Toreros competed against Santa Clara, in Ebright Invitational on April 7 and 8

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — San Diego men's rowing traveled to the Bay Area last weekend, for a scrimmage against Santa Clara, followed by two races at the Ebright Invitational, hosted by UC Berkeley.

On Friday, the team's Freshman Four raced against Santa Clara, with the latter taking the victory in the 2,000-meter contest that was contested amidst some challenging conditions on the Lexington Reservoir. (Times were not recorded.)

"We came off the line even with their entry, and then when we settled into our base rhythm the Santa Clara guys moved ahead," said head coach Bart Thompson. "Our Frosh Four has four true novices in it. The entry from Santa Clara was full of experienced rowers who've been in the sport for years. In that context, I'm proud of our guys for the work they did."

Afterwards, the team packed up and headed north to race at the Ebright Invitational, hosted by UC Berkeley.

In Saturday morning's racing, the Toreros' Varsity Eight lost a race to the talented California 1F crew. "They are the #1-ranked program in the country for a reason," said Thompson. "We knew it would be a tough race. We didn't get the start that we were capable of, which we needed if we were going to make it a race."

In the afternoon's racing--which was made challenging by a concurrent sailing race on the Oakland Estuary--the Toreros fought tooth-and-nail against the entry from Orange Coast College all the way down the course. The Pirates crept ahead in the race's final minute and eked out a 1.5-second victory. "We had the start that we wanted and were up a few seats 500 meters into the race," Thompson said. "It stayed that way throughout the middle of the race, and in the final 300 meters or so they pushed through our guys."

The team is in the midst of its busiest section of racing in the year, having raced each of the past two weekends and will be racing again this weekend at the UCSD Invitational. It will be the final race in San Diego this season for the team.
