SAN DIEGO – The No. 29 University of San Diego men's tennis team secured it seventh WCC Regular Season Championship in the last nine years with a sweep of Saint Mary's, 4-0.
 
San Diego earned the thrilling doubles point to go up 1-0. After Saint Mary's earned a win at No. 1, the Toreros answered with a 6-2 win at No. 3 (Marvin Schaber/Lambert Ruland). At No. 2 singles, Oliver Tarvet and Stian Klaassen edged the Gaels 7-6 (8-6).
 
In singles, Iiro Vasa raced to a 6-2, 6-2 victory. Tarvet took home a 6-3, 6-4 win at the No. 1 spot, and Nikhil Niranjan clinched the regular season title with a 6-1, 6-4 margin at No. 6.
 
"Congrats to this young squad for battling to take a share of the conference championship," said head coach Ryan Keckley. "This team's daily work ethic stands out to me as they have improved each week since August.  To see these young men buy into our system and make these kinds of jumps this early in their career is the reason why we are able to hold up the regular season trophy today.  It's the process that each of these athletes have bought into this year.
 
Today, I am proud of the way we competed against SMC down the stretch, especially freshman Ollie Tarvet who beat one of the more dangerous players in our conference.  We need a solid week of focused practice this week leading up to the WCC tournament.  Our urgency and energy weren't as on point as they have been in previous matches, so we need to spend time understanding the value of those items moving forward.  We will get back to working on our fundamentals in preparation for an exciting WCC tournament!"
 
San Diego ends the regular season with a 16-6 (8-1 WCC) record, and will compete in the WCC semifinals on Friday.
