SPOKANE, WA — San Diego baseball (13-15-1, 6-5 WCC) on Friday scored once in the top of the ninth before bringing the go-ahead run to the plate but could not complete the rally for a comeback win at Gonzaga, dropping a close 3-2 decision to the Bulldogs (12-15, 8-3 WCC) at the Patterson Baseball Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After the Zags struck first for a pair of runs in the bottom of the third on a bases-loaded walk and an RBI groundout, both teams remained scoreless until the sixth inning.
- That frame saw the Toreros get on the board with a booming RBI triple from Jack Costello, which split the right-center field gap to plate Kevin Sim and cut the deficit to just one run at 2-1.
- Gonzaga added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI double, sending San Diego to the top of the ninth chasing by a pair of runs.
- James Arakawa began USD's final set of at-bats with a leadoff single, then Justin DeCriscio drew a four-pitch walk.
- Back-to-back wild pitches followed, scoring Arakawa to bring the Toreros within one run as DeCriscio moved to third.
- Angelo Peraza worked a full count but struck out swinging to end Friday night's contest, leaving San Diego one run shy of a gritty comeback win as it suffered a 3-2 loss at Gonzaga.
ON THE MOUND
- Righty James Sashin started the game on the mound for USD and turned in 4.2 innings, surrendering a pair of earned runs on six hits while walking two and striking out one.
- Right-hander Ivran Romero relieved Sashin with two outs in the fifth and stranded a runner before closing out the game with 3.1 innings of one-run ball, scattering two hits while walking none and matching his career-high with five strikeouts.
