Toreros Beat Bulldogs 9-3 For Series Win at Gonzaga

San Diego leads from start to finish on Saturday, takes two of three from Zags in decisive fashion

SPOKANE, WA — San Diego baseball (14-15-1, 7-5 WCC) on Saturday dominated Gonzaga from start to finish to secure a series win at the Patterson Baseball Complex, beating the Bulldogs (12-16, 8-4 WCC) by a 9-3 margin behind an early offensive outburst and a series of impressive pitching performances down the stretch.

EARLY AND OFTEN
  • Angelo Peraza got the scoring started in the top of the first, blasting an opposite-field triple to right that brought home Justin DeCriscio.
  • Peraza came in to score a batter later when Kevin Sim shot an RBI single though the right side, doubling the Toreros' lead as he made it 2-0.
  • Austin Smith completed USD's early outburst when he bounced an RBI single of his own back up the middle, putting San Diego up 3-0 before it took the field for the bottom of the first.
  • Gonzaga answered back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth on a pair of RBI singles to make it a one-run game at 3-2, but the Toreros instantly responded in the top half of the fifth.
  • San Diego scored twice that inning on another RBI single from Sim and a steal of home from third by Dustin Allen that came after the Zags threw to second on a Justin DeCriscio stolen base, reestablishing their lead at 5-2.
  • USD kept adding on across the final stages of Saturday afternoon's contest with a RBI single from Ariel Armas in the sixth and a massive solo homer from Peraza in the eighth, making it 7-2 in favor of the Toreros.
  • After the Zags pushed across a run in the bottom of the seventh on a solo homer, San Diego delivered a pair of finishing blows in the top half of the ninth, notching two key insurance runs when Jack Costello ripped an RBI single back up the middle and Will Worthington slapped a line-drive RBI single the other way, giving USD a 9-3 lead it did not relinquish.
RENNIE BATTLES, BULLPEN GETS IT DONE
  • Right-hander Garrett Rennie began Saturday afternoon's game on the mound for the Toreros, scattering five hits across four innings while allowing two runs, walking none, and striking out a single batter.
  • He was relieved by fellow righty Ryan Robinson, who threw 1.1 scoreless frames before passing the baton to left-hander Mikiah Negrete, who turned in 0.2 without surrendering a run.
  • Right-hander Jack Bunnell allowed a single run on three hits in an inning of work, then right-handers Ryan Kysar and Conner Thurman teamed up to close the game out with a scoreless inning apiece.
TORERO TIDBITS

  • DeCriscio was hitless but drew a pair of walks.
  • Peraza scored a game-high three runs.
  • Robinson picked up the win on Saturday to move to 3-1 in 2023.
