CORVALLIS, Ore. — In the opening round of the NCAA Corvallis Regionals Monday, hosted by Oregon State, San Diego men's golf is in a solid spot after 18 holes of action at Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis, Ore.

After the opening round, the seventh-seeded Toreros are tied for fifth with Charlotte at 4-under par.

Leading the way for the Toreros is You Seong Choi, who shot a bogey-free 3-under 68 and sits tied for seventh on the individual leaderboard.

Choi made consecutive birdies on the par-5 fifth and the par-3 sixth before notching a birdie on the par-4 18th.

Reed Arnaldo also finished in the red numbers to begin his first NCAA Regionals as a freshman, shooting 1-under 70.

Like Choi, Arnaldo got up to 3-under; however the freshman accomplished that within the first six holes. Despite bogeys on the par-4 seventh and 10th holes, Arnaldo answered back with birdies on the par-3 13th and the par-5 14th.

To round out the team scoring, both Ian Maspat and Cooper Humphreys both shot even par. Maspat, who was the individual champion at the WCC Tournament earlier this month, got back to even par with a birdie on the par-4 ninth. On the back nine, Maspat bogeyed the 14th hole before finishing with a birdie on the final hole, like Choi.

Humphreys opened the tournament with a birdie on the par-4 third before dropping a shot on the seventh. Like Maspat, Humphreys recorded birdie on the par-5 16th and a bogey on the par-4 17th.

San Diego's fifth competitor is Reid Piron with Brady Clark as the substitute. Piron shot 2-over 73, highlighted by birdies on the second and 16th holes. Piron was also the only Torero to birdie the par-4 10th.

On the team leaderboard, the Toreros, who are competing in their sixth straight NCAA Regionals, are four strokes back of the hosts, Oregon State. USD is five shots back of both Oklahoma and Arkansas at 9-under par. San Diego also remains eight shots back of the current leader, Purdue, which sits at 12-under par.

Choi is one of eight players tied at 3-under par. There are also five players in second place and behind Emil Borrestuen Herstad from Washington, who is in first place at 5-under par.

The second round of the NCAA Corvallis Regional continues tomorrow at Trysting Tree Golf Club. The top five teams and the low individual not on a qualifying team will advance to the NCAA Championships at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa May 29-June 3 in Carlsbad, Calif.
