USD 3rd In WCC Commissioner's Cup

May 22, 2003

The 2002-03 West Coast Conference (WCC) seasons have come to an end and the USD Toreros finished third out of eight teams in the WCC Commissioner's Cup standings. The Toreros placed second in the Men's All-Sports standings, just one point behind Pepperdine, and third in the Women's All-Sports ranking.

The Commissioner's Cup is an all-sports award presented at the end of each academic year to the league's top performing school in conference play. A Women's and Men's All-Sports award, recognizing athletic achievement within each gender, is also presented. Pepperdine won for the second straight year with the inaugural season coming in the 2001-02 season.

The recipient of the Commissioner's Cup is based on a point system reflecting the place finish of each team in conference play. The Women's and Men's All-Sports awards are given to the schools that accumulate the most points within each particular gender. The institution with the highest point total after combining the women's and men's point totals is honored with the Commissioner's Cup.

USD, which sent five WCC teams to the NCAA Tournament this year, had nine of its twelve WCC sports finish in the top three. The Toreros accumulated 66 points to finish in third behind Pepperdine (78.5) and Santa Clara (69.5). The Toreros beat out Portland (54.5), San Francisco (52), Loyola Marymount (49), Gonzaga (44) and Saint Mary's (31.5).
