Assistant Director of Athletic Performance


Matt Couch enters his seventh year as Assistant Director of Athletic Performance where he has primarily coached the Baseball, Softball, Men’s Soccer, Women’s Soccer and Men’s crew programs while assisting with Football in the weight room. He develops a comprehensive strength and conditioning program that focuses on explosive power and strength while keeping athletic development, mobility and recovery at the forefront.

Before coaching at the University, Matt was an accomplished student-athlete here on the USD baseball program. He was a three-time All-WCC pitcher and was named Captain during his Senior campaign where he helped lead the Toreros to a top ranking of #4 in the country. He was also fortunate enough to be named a Cape-Cod All-Star in 2007 while playing in the prestigious Cape Cod Summer Baseball League.

Matt graduated with a degree in Communications from the University of San Diego and has since received his Master’s degree in Global Leadership from USD. Couch has been certified by the NSCA (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist) and CrossFit in Olympic Weightlifting.

Matt and his wife, Sophia, reside in downtown San Diego, in the Little Italy area.
