Will Guarino enters his 22nd season with the Toreros as Head Coach for Men's and Women's Cross Country and the Women's Track programs in 2025-26.
Coach Guarino made an immediate impact in his first year at USD as he guided Tiffany Marley to capture the WCC Women's Cross Country Championship, the only one in program history.
He works diligently to bring the Torero program to new heights. Guarino is responsible for championing track and added the women's program as an NCAA sanctioned sport in 2008.
Under his guidance, athletes have set school records in the Women's 400m, 800m, 1500m, Mile, 3K, 3000m Steeplechase, 5K, and 10K. On the men's side, multiple Toreros have set records in at least the 800m, 1500m, 3km, 8km and 10km.
On the track, he helped Daniella Hubble qualified for the 2024 NCAA Track and Field West Regional in the 3000m Steeplechase.Â
One of the most accomplished student athletes to be brought up under Guarino's direction is class of 2024 graduate Gianna Sbarbaro. In 2020 Sbarbaro became the first Torero to compete at the NCAA Cross Country National Championships. In 2024 she was a WCC nomination for NCAA Woman of the Year.Â
Guarino's program has also produced success in the classroom. The Toreros have been in the top-10 percent in academic achievement since 2011, receiving consistent recognition from the WCC, NCAA and USTFCCCA. The program has also produced a Fulbright scholar and numerous WCC All-Academic team members.
In 2025 as a part of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, all three teams – men's cross country, women's cross country and women's track – earned USTFCCCA National All-Academic Team status.Â
Guarino received his bachelor's degree in Spanish and minored in Business from USD in 1988. He was also a scholar athlete at San Diego earning runner-up in the 10,000m at WCC Championships and was named the program's Most Valuable Runner. Guarino continues to champion education in sports and recently held a distance coaching clinic featuring legendary coaches Joe Vigil, Joe Newton and Dan Green at the University of San Diego. In 2024, he earned a Master’s Degree in Higher Education from the university.Â
Guarino lives in San Diego with his wife, Michelle, and their three children, Diego, Angelo, and Gabriella.
