TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - Marcus Cooke's 18 points helped give Winthrop a 70-66 win over San Diego Tuesday in the consolation game of Arizona State's azcentral.com Hoops Classic.
Tyrone Walker added 13 points and seven rebounds and made 4 of 5 free throws in the final 23 seconds for the Eagles (6-5), who snapped a three-game losing streak.
Brice Vounang scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half for the Toreros (3-10). Nick Lewis added 15 points.
Although San Diego never led in the second half, it never fell behind by more than six and got within 66-64 with 1:30 left.
But Brandon Gay made an errant pass with 30 seconds left, giving Winthrop the ball. Walker made two free throws with 23.7 seconds left but missed the front end of a one-and-one with 12.5 seconds remaining.
Vounang made a layup with 5.3 seconds left but Walker sealed the victory with a pair of free throws one second later.
The Eagles took advantage of San Diego's season-high 30 turnovers, scoring 32 points off those mistakes. That made up for a 46 percent shooting night (25 of 55). San Diego stayed close by making 25 of 47 (53 percent) from the field, including 6 of 17 from beyond the 3-point line. The Toreros also outrebounded the Eagles 38-21.
Winthrop led 40-36 at halftime behind Cooke's 14 points.
