Five USD Football Players Earn Pre-Season Honors

San Diego, Calif. - The University of San Diego football team had five players selected to Don Hansen's Football Gazette NCAA I-AA Mid-Major Pre-Season All-America Team. Three of the five were named First Team: 6-4 sophomore WR Michael Gasperson (Monterey, CA), 6-3 senior kicker Adam Williams (Mission Viejo, CA) and 6-1 senior LB Andy Guzenski (Granite Bay, CA) Second Team honors went to 6-3 senior QB Eric Rasmussen (Sacramento, CA) and 5-9 senior return specialist Gavin Ng (Mililani, HI).

Gasperson and Guzenski both earned First Team All-Pioneer Football League honors this past season for the Toreros. Gasperson led the Toreros with 57 receptions for 907 yards and 10 touchdowns. He set a PFL and USD record for touchdown receptions in a game with 5 against Valparaiso. Guzenski (USD Defensive Player of the Year) led the Toreros with 90 tackles (7 for loss) and one interception. Williams was one of the top kickers in the PFL after nailing 11-of-16 field goals and 34-of-35 PAT kicks. He led the Toreros in scoring with 67 points.

Both Rasmussen (USD Offensive Player of the Year) and Ng (USD Special Teams Player of the Year) were recognized by the PFL as honorable mention this past season. Rasmussen, who led the entire NCAA I-AA ranks in passing efficiency, completed 170 of 279 passes for 2,470 yards, 25 touchdowns and just one interception. Twice Rasmussen was selected a PFL Player of the Week, including October 26th after he set a PFL/USD record with seven touchdown passes. Ng led the Toreros in punt returns (9.2 average) and kick returns (22.1).

The Toreros, who are coming off a 5-5 campaign that saw them finish second in the Pioneer Football League, return 65 players and are expecting 37 newcomers when players report to camp on August 12th.
