San Diego, CA - USD has drawn cross-town rival San Diego State in first round action at SDSU's Courts on Saturday, May 10th at 12 noon. Led by 7th year Head Coach Tom Hagedorn, USD finished the 2003 spring season 13- 9 overall with notable wins over 2003 Championship teams Florida State, Pepperdine and SDSU. The Toreros are making the school's seventh overall NCAA team appearance.
"This is something these players deserve," said Hagedorn after the announcement Wednesday. "We are ecstatic for the opportunity and it is a huge step for this program."
USD knocked off the Aztecs 4-3 back on February 27th. If the Toreros can defeat San Diego State (15-9) for the second time this season in first round play next Saturday, the Toreros will then face the winner of American University (15-3) and the University of Washington (16-5). Those two teams are set to play at 9:00 a.m. Saturday at SDSU's Courts on May 10th just prior to USD-SDSU match.
The team championships will conclude with final round play hosted by the University of Georgia May 17-26 in Athens, Georgia. The 64 singles players and 32 double teams that will compete in the 2003 Division I Men's Tennis Championships will be announced on www.ncaasports.com, Thursday, May 1, by 3 p.m. Pacific time.
