No. 13 USD Sweeps Portland in WCC Opener

PORTLAND, Ore. — No. 13 San Diego men's tennis opened West Coast Conference play with a commanding performance Friday, sweeping Portland 4-0 on the road at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center to improve to 13-4 on the season, its fifth straight win.

The Toreros wasted no time establishing control in doubles, earning the point on two of the three courts. The ranked tandem of Adrien Berrut and Lambert Ruland — nationally ranked 27th — set the tone with a dominant 6-2 victory on court one, while Oliver Tarvet and Luc Wieland followed with a crisp 6-4 win on court two. The third doubles match between Manvydas Balciunas and Timo Barthes – Barthes' collegiate debut – was left unfinished at 5-5, as San Diego claimed the doubles point.

Singles play belonged to the Toreros from the jump. Defending WCC Player of the Week Tarvet, the senior captain and reigning fall National Champion, was masterful on main court, taking down Portland's Cade Fernando without dropping a single game — a flawless 6-1, 6-3 dispatch.

The clinching point came courtesy of Ruland on court three, who rebounded from dropping the first set to Portland's Lucas Kimelman 4-6, before winning the final two sets 6-2, 6-2 in commanding fashion. Balciunas then put an exclamation mark on the victory at No. 2 singles with a gritty three-set win over Tom Garcia — dropping the first set in a tiebreak before pulling through 7-6 (7), 3-6, 7-5 in a hard-fought battle that showed the freshman's poise under pressure.

With the match playing to clinch 4-0, the remaining three courts were left unfinished, as Berrut was competing in a competitive three-set affair at No. 4, while senior Neo Niedner was only one set into his match and Wieland was yet to begin his due to Portland only having three courts in it's facility.

Up Next
The Toreros stay in the Pacific Northwest for the weekend to compete against un-ranked Gonzaga on Sunday, March 29, at 11 a.m. in Spokane, Wash.
