San Diego, CA - The San Diego Toreros continued their dominance over the Michigan State Spartans on Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 victory. USD is now 3-0 all-time against the Spartans, outscoring them 9-1. Michigan State had won all five matches this year by a combined score of 16-2 before facing the Toreros. San Diego improves to 3-2-1 on the year with the win.
The Torero offense came out strong, outshooting the Spartans 13 to 4 in the first half, including posting the first seven shots of the game. Michigan State looked like they had a great opportunity to score in the 21st minute, but USD goalkeeper Lance Friesz turned away back to back shots to keep the game scoreless. San Diego took the lead near the end of the first half when Ryan Guy tipped in a pass from Scott Martin from 20 yards out.
Michigan State almost tied the game in the 48th minute when a hard shot from Ryan McMahen deflected off the post. Ryan Guy gave the Toreros an insurance goal in the 63rd minute when he took a pass from Eric Pohl, dribbled around a defender and blasted a shot over goalie into the back of the net for his second goal of the match.
USD's offense was in control of most of the match, outshooting the Spartans 25 to 7. The Toreros had 12 corners to just one for Michigan State. Lance Friesz stopped three shots to record his second shutout of the year.
The Toreros return home next Sunday, September 26th at 2:00pm to take on Cal State Northridge.
