The post-season honors keep rolling in for the USD football team that finished the year 11-1 overall, won their first PFL Championship, and ranked No. 1 in the final The Sports Network I-AA Mid-Major Poll. Four Toreros were named First Team All-America on the 2005 The Sports Network Mid-Major Football All-America Team - sophomore quarterback Josh Johnson (Oakland, Calif.), sophomore offensive center Jordan Paopao (Oceanside, Calif.), sophomore defensive end Eric Bakhtiari (Burlingame, Calif.), and senior strong safety Philip Bretsch (Fallbrook, Calif.).
Head coach Jim Harbaugh, along with team captain Philip Bretsch, will be in Chattanooga, Tennessee on Thursday, December 15th, at the 19th Annual Division I-AA College Football Awards to accept The Sports Network Cup for finishing as the top I-AA Mid-Major team. Harbaugh is also a finalist for the Eddie Robinson I-AA Coach of the Year honor that will be announced on Thursday evening.
The Toreros were also well represented on the 2005 Don Hansen's Football Gazette I-AA Mid-Major All-America Team. Harbaugh was tabbed the I-AA Mid-Major Coach of the Year and Josh Johnson was named the Offensive Back of the Year. Johnson was the lone Torero named to the First Team Offense, with Eric Bakhtiari and Philip Bretsch being selected to the First Team Defense. Johnson set school records for completions (260), TD passes (36), passing yards (3,256), total offense (3,635) and completion percentage (.701).
A trio of Toreros were named to the 2nd Team Offense - redshirt freshman running back JT Rogan (Coronado, Calif.), senior wide receiver Adam Hannula (Tacoma, WA) and sophomore center Jordan Paopao (Oceanside, Calif.). Earning Honorable Mention was senior wide receiver Nick Garton (Dana Point, Calif.) and sophomore left tackle Reis Rosenbledt (Burlingame, Calif.).
