SAN DIEGO - The USD Toreros (8-3) got back to their winning ways with a convincing 90-57 victory over the visiting Loyola-Chicago Ramblers (7-2). Torero 5th-year seniors Nick Lewis and Corey Belser set the tone for the evening. Belser held LUC leading scorer Blake Schilb to zero baskets and 3 points in 29 minutes of action, and Lewis poured in 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the field. The Toreros, coming off a disappointing 94-91 overtime loss to Texas-Arlington this past Saturday, jumped out to an 18-2 lead out of the gates and never looked back. USD will host the New Mexico Lobos (7-3) this coming Thursday at 7 pm.
In the first half the Toreros took a 48-23 lead into the locker room as they converted 61.3% of their shots from the field (19-31). Lewis had 12 of his 21 points in the first half, and was followed by Ross DeRogatis and Gyno Pomare, each with 8 points. USD bombed in 7-of-10 treys in the first 20 minutes too with Lewis, DeRogatis and Danny Brown each cashing in on two treys. Loyola-Chicago was held to 25.9% shooting from the Torero defense.
In the 2nd half the closest the Ramblers would get is 22 points (52-30) on a three-pointer from Tom Levin. USD's biggest lead of the game would be 38 points (85-47) with 5:35 to go. Besides Lewis, USD got double-digit scoring from Gyno Pomare (16 points), Brandon Johnson (a season-best 15 points & 6 assists), and Corey Belser (10 points). The Toreros shot a season-best 63.6% from the field (35-55) and a season-best 66.7% from beyond the three-point arc (10-15).
