San Diego, Calif. - The University of San Diego (3-3) began the season with a dismal 0-3 record after facing three Top-30 opponents to begin the year. However, the Toreros are gaining confidence and momentum after upsetting their second straight ranked opponent Sunday afternoon at the USD West Tennis Courts. The University of Michigan (7-3), ranked No. 41 in the country, proved to be no match for the home team, losing 5-2, and head coach Tom Hagedorn was pleased with his team's effort today.

"It was a hard fought match. We are keeping our focus and playing as a team," said the ninth-year coach.

The afternoon began with singles play and San Diego showed its depth by capturing four of the six matches to clinch the contest. Junior Pierrick Ysern lead the way for the Toreros, as he defeated Michael Rubin at the No. 1 position 6-3, 6-4. Seniors Nic Beuque and Robbie Blair also scored victories at the No. 2 and No. 4 spots, respectively, as Beuque took out Matko Maravic 6-2, 7-5 and Blair shut down Ryan Heller 6-2, 6-3. Finally, freshman Thomas Liversage continued his fine play as of late by breezing through Steve Peretz 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 5 spot.

With the match already at hand, the Toreros could have easily suffered a let down in doubles play, but that would not prove to be the case. San Diego swept all three matches to take the doubles point. Ysern and Plotnik overcame Maravic and Brian Hung 8-6 at No. 1, while Blair and Liversage pulled off a tight 9-7 victory over Michael Rubin and Steve Peretz at the No. 2 spot. Finally, Matt Ozurovich and Koristovic triumphed at the No. 3 position with an 8-6 win over Vinny Gossain and Heller.

After defeating No. 29 Arizona on Friday and Michigan Sunday afternoon, the Toreros will look conquer their third straight ranked team when No. 21 Washington visits Alcalá Park on Monday afternoon at 1:30 P.M.
