(San Diego, Calif.) - USD senior running back Evan Harney (Fallbrook, Calif.), a two-time All-American, is out indefinitely and likely will miss the entire 2005 season after suffering head injuries in a freak fall over the weekend. Harney, who was released from the hospital on Monday afternoon, suffered the injuries on Saturday.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with Evan and his family at this time," said head coach Jim Harbaugh. "The accident wasn't life-threatening, but it is a blessing that he is still able to walk."
In just two short years at USD Harney has already set Torero career marks for rushing yards (2,809), rushing attempts (588) and rushing touchdowns (35). Last season he was tabbed the NCAA I-AA Mid-Major Offensive Back of the Year (Don Hansen's Football Weekly Gazette) after rushing for a school record 18 touchdowns and 1,334 yards. An honor student who carries a 3.90 grade-point average as a Business Administration major, he also garnered First Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America honors. During his first year (2003 season) he broke the Torero single season rushing record for yards with 1,475 while finding the endzone 17 times.
Second year head Jim Harbaugh and his staff, coming off a 7-4 season (5 straight wins to end the season), begin camp next Wednesday, August 10th.
