SFA Lumberjacks win defensive battle over Toreros

Dec. 15, 2007

(San Diego, CA) - USD's Gyno Pomare scored a career-high 25 points, but it wasn't enough as the visiting Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (8-1) won a defensive battle at the JCP by the score of 56-50. The Toreros (5-8) held a 43-39 lead with 4:39 to go, but SFA's Josh Alexander (22 points) hit a jumper and three-pointer for a 44-43 lead and the Jacks never trailed again. Alexander finished the game 8-for-13 from the field, including 5-of-8 shooting beyond the three-point arc. SFA center Matt Kingsley chipped in 17 points, while USD received double digit scoring from De'Jon Jackson (10 points, 4 assists).

SFA came to the JCP riding a 5-game winning streak with their last win coming at Oklahoma. More importantly, they were giving up just 56 points per game. Both SFA and the Toreros played hard defense today but the visitors made the plays down the stretch to earn a hard-fought 56-50 victory. USD shot the ball well (52.6%), and again was solid at the free throw line (71.4%), but turned the ball over 18 times against the Jacks' defense.

The Toreros are off until next Saturday, December 22nd, when they host Texas-San Antonio in a 1 pm contest.
