(San Diego, CA) -- First year head coach Bill Grier and his staff have completed their 2007-08 schedule, and it is arguably the toughest schedule a Torero men's basketball team has faced. It features two teams in USC and UNLV that reached the 2007 NCAA Sweet Sixteen; two second round NCAA Tourney teams in Nevada and Kentucky; and WCC foe Gonzaga University. Miami-Ohio, a first round NCAA entrant, is also a possible second day opponent at the Anaheim Classic over Thanksgiving Weekend.
"We're extremely excited about our schedule," said head coach Bill Grier. "In college basketball, the scheduling process is now probably harder than recruiting. We have a very challenging preseason schedule. Early on we start at Hawaii, and then return to face UNLV (a sweet 16 team), San Diego State and USC (another sweet 16 team) in a span of six days. We end the year at Kentucky which will be a great challenge and experience for our team. I think our kids are excited about the schedule and now we start our preparations of getting them ready for that challenge."
The Bill Grier era will begin on November 9th with a road contest at the University of Hawaii. Following that contest, USD will return home for three straight games beginning with Cal State Monterrey on November 12th. USD will then take on the UNLV Running Rebels on Nov. 17th and crosstown rival San Diego State on Nov. 19th. Over Thanksgiving weekend the Toreros will be one of eight teams participating in the inaugural ESPN Anaheim Classic where they will open up against the USC Trojans on Nov. 22nd. They'll face either Miami-Ohio or South Alabama on day two, and also get a third game in on Nov. 25th. Other tourney entrants include Southern Illinois, another Sweet 16 team from a year ago, Tennessee-Chattanooga, UC Irvine and Mississippi State. The Toreros close out the month of November with a road contest at Boise State on Nov. 28th.
The month of December will include home dates against Hawaii (Dec. 2nd), San Jose State (Dec. 5th), Stephen F. Austin State (Dec. 15th) and Texas San Antonio (Dec. 22nd). The road slate in December will include tough contests at New Mexico (Dec. 8th), Nevada (Dec. 12th), Kentucky (Dec. 29th) and Marshall (Dec. 31). USD's last tune-up before West Coast Conference play will be against CS Bakersfield on Jan. 9th.
West Coast Conference play will begin with a home game against San Francisco on Jan. 12th. Other WCC home dates include Santa Clara (Jan. 26th), Saint Mary's (Jan. 28th), Portland (Feb. 16th), Gonzaga (Feb. 18th), Pepperdine (Mar. 1st) and Loyola Marymount (Mar. 3rd). USD's first WCC road contest will be at Gonzaga on Jan. 19th, followed by games at Portland (Jan. 21st), LMU (Feb. 2nd), Pepperdine (Feb. 4th), San Francisco (Feb. 11th), Santa Clara (Feb. 23rd), and Saint Mary's (Feb. 25th).
USD and the Jenny Craig Pavilion will be the site for the 2008 West Coast Conference Basketball Championsips, March 7-10 for the men's contests.
