SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Freshman forward Rob Jones of the University of San Diego men's basketball team was tabbed as the West Coast Conference Co-Player of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday afternoon. Jones takes home the honor with Saint Mary's College's senior guard Todd Golden.
Jones, one of the top freshmen in the WCC, turned in an impressive week, scoring 21.5 points per game and grabbing 10.0 rebounds per game in the Toreros' wins over Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine. In addition, the San Francisco native shot 55.3 percent from the field. Jones started the week with his first career double-double, tossing in a career-high 27 points to go along with a career-best 13 boards in USD's 72-48 win over LMU. He followed that up with a 16-point, seven-rebound effort in the Toreros' win at Pepperdine.
The performances by Golden and Jones created a three-way tie atop the conference standings as Gonzaga, Saint Mary's, and San Diego all own a 6-1 league record. The three teams have only dropped games to each other, as Gonzaga lost to Saint Mary's, Saint Mary's lost to San Diego, and San Diego lost to Gonzaga.
Jones and the Toreros will return to action on Monday as they head to Jones' hometown of San Francisco to take on the University of San Francisco in a 8 p.m. game.
