SAN DIEGO, Calif. - In a very aggressive home opening match for the Toreros, the University of San Diego men's soccer team posted a 3-0 loss to the University of Albany.
The Great Danes struck in the first half at the 25th minute mark. The Danes were inside the USD penalty box as they fired off one shot which was deflected by goalkeeper Tommy McClain. The ball bounced back at the feet of Albany Forward Shaun Kane who fired it back over McClain and into the net for the 1-0 lead. By the end of the first half, two yellow cards had been issued to USD.
The second half was similar to the first as one ejection was issued and five yellow cards were assessed.
The Danes were again in USD territory in the 57th minute. The Toreros fought to clear the ball, however their efforts fell short as Claudio Dantas passed back to Don Johnson who placed the shot in the bottom right corner giving the Danes a 2-0 lead.
The final goal came in the 84th minute as Mikael McNamara connected with Claudio Dantas who placed a ball past the keeper low on the ground extending the lead to 3-0 for the final goal of the match.
The Toreros out-shot the Danes 10-8 overall with Dane McCleary and JD Penilton recording the two USD shots on goal. San Diego had 14 fouls called against them to Albany's 17. USD still leads the overall series between the two teams 3-1-0.
The Toreros fall to 0-2-1 on the season and will continue to fight for that first win of the 2008 campaign on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. as they take on the University of Michigan Wolverines at Torero Stadium.
