SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego softball team faced off against the RedHawks of Miami University of Ohio Sunday afternoon at the USD Softball Complex. The Toreros fell 1-0 in game one and lost 4-3 in game two.
Pitcher Jennifer Ellenbeck had 11 strikeouts from the pitching circle breaking a single game personal best of 10 (vs Rogers State on Mar. 18, 2007 and vs Oregon on Feb. 28, 2008).
In game one, the Toreros and the RedHawks went deep into extra innings with Ellenbeck leading the way defensively. The Toreros had runners in scoring position in the first inning and again in the sixth inning but were unable to push across a run. In the ninth inning, the RedHawks loaded the bases and scored to take a 1-0 lead for the win.
In game two, USD fell behind 2-0 in the third inning. The RedHawks added another run in the fifth inning to take a 3-0 lead. USD mounted a comeback when Taryn Keenan got on base when she was hit by a pitch. Carey Casciola followed with a single into right centerfield moving Keenan to second base. Soto cleared the bases with a double to the wall in left field scoring Keenan and Casciola. Lindsey Fleet took base on balls followed by Taylor Lawrence being called out on batter's interference. Keely Helbock doubled to right centerfield moving Fleet to third base and scoring Soto. Ellenbeck grounded to the shortstop for the second out. The inning ended when Kristen Gensler struck out leaving the game tied at 3-3.
The RedHawks led off with a homerun to left field to take a 4-3 lead and go on to win.
The Toreros return to action on Thursday, March 11 marking the start of the San Diego Classic II as they face the University of Connecticut Huskies at the USD Softball Complex at 7:00 p.m.
