SAN DIEGO, Calif. - USD men's golfer Ian Coffman has advanced to the sectional qualifying rounds as an amateur for the 2009 U.S. Open. On the Monday (May 18th) before the USD golf team left for Nationals, Coffman fired a 70 (-2) at San Diego Country Club in Chula Vista, CA. He was one of eight players to advance on, and his 70 was only bettered by Larry Correa's (San Diego, CA) 69.
The graduate student from San Diego (St. Augustine HS) will compete in 36 holes this coming Monday, June 8th, at Saticoy Country Club in Somis (Ventura County), California, with hopes of qualifying for the 2009 U.S. Open. at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, N.Y., June 15 - 21.
Coffman will be joined in the field at Saticoy by approximately 90 players, including PGA Tour players Duffy Waldorf and Charlie Wi, to name a few. The final number of qualifying spots available at the sectionals may not be announced until the day of play.
Sectional qualifying, played over 36 holes, will be conducted at 13 sites in the United States on June 8th. The Saticoy course, at 6,884 yards with a par of 72, has a rating of 75.1 and slope of 143.
