SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Toreros recorded their third consecutive shutout of the season as they defeated the University of Wisconsin Badgers 3-0 Friday night at Torero Stadium.
The win for USD is the first time since 2002 that the Toreros have opened the season at 3-0-0. The Badgers fall to 1-1-1 on the season.
In the 42nd minute, JT Howlan took advantage of a penalty kick breaking up a 0-0 tie. San Diego was on the attack inside the Badger penalty box as a shot was sent at a defender inside the goalkeeper box and was deflected off a Wisconsin player's hand. The play drew a red card giving USD the advantage. Howlan lined up the PK and with a stutter step sent the ball low and to his right for a goal.
In the 71st minute, Charles Blasé sent a pass from midfield to teammate Stephen Posa who was sitting 15 yards from the goal. Posa caught, trapped, and flipped the ball over Badger goalkeeper Alex Horwath lifting USD to a 2-0 lead.
In the 84th minute, Kyle Ochoa scored USD's final goal of the night. On the far side, Charles Blasé took control of a ball and crossed it from 30 yards out into Ochoa who was waiting inside the box. Ochoa leaped and headed it into the upper 90 giving San Diego their final goal of the match.
Kelin Briones recorded 85 minutes of play on the night with two saves and improving to 3-0 on the season before letting freshman Ryan Coulter get some time in the box. Alex Horwath saddles the loss tallying six saves on the night. The Toreros out-shot the Badgers 15-5 and recorded nine corner kicks to Wisconsin's five.
The Toreros return to action on Sunday afternoon for the final day of The Courtyard by Marriott San Diego Central Soccer Tournament as they host the University of Pennsylvania Quakers at 2:00 p.m. at Torero Stadium.
